The Rock as I know it.



The origin of Rock N’Roll begins in the 50’s even though I believe it begins in the late 10’s or early 20’s.  There were no plugged instruments so it was pure raw talent. From those days we can recall Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith, to my perspective they are among the best voices ever, the 30’s brought along Ella Fitzgerald, the 40’s had the WWII and to my opinion with the exception of Mr. Nat King Cole no other exceptional voice came out this decade. An interesting fact from those years, rock (At this time was called Soul, Jazz, R&B  or
Gospel) was a Black Rhythm, it was not till the early 50’s when white people started to sing Rock, a few names comes to my mind, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others.  On the other side of the pond the British did not conform much to rock n' roll notions. They looked more like orchestras,  a band leader up front, often with a conductor's baton;  musicians divided into sections of rhythm,  brass,  wind instruments, sometimes strings; singers who were essentially anonymous, their names only rarely credited on recordings. The 60’s were a totally different animal, the real Rock explode on both Ends of the pond,  from  America names like James Brown, Bob Dylan, Janice Joplins and 
Jimi Hendrix  came to live, the British invasion brought  bands   like, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and  The Who. The 70’s can be known as the Hard Rock era, the 80’s brought the Heavy metal, and as a consequence:  Thrash metal, speed metal and Gothic Rock. The 90’s brought the Alternative Rock, death rock and what my friend Sergio Ivan Barbosa calls the German invasion.  I lost the track of rock on Emo and Grind Core. Rock N’ Roll  has been a little bit different in 
Latin America and Spain, a few bands are considered good representatives of this genre: Zapato 3 and Caramelos de Cianuro from  Venezuela,  Kraken and Ekymosis, from which Juanes split for a solo career from Colombia. Café Tacuba and Molotov From Mexico, Alux Nahual  from Guatemala, Soda Estereo and Charlie Garcia From Argentina, La ley from Chile, Baron Rojo and Miguel Rios From Spain
the Reggae with Bob Marley from Jamaica and the islands and from Brazil  sepulture and Violator among the 30 best thrash bands in the
world.

El Rock Como lo  Conozco


El origen del rock se remonta a los años  50’s,  yo  pienso que sus albores son a finales de la década de los 10’s ó  a  comienzo de los 20’s. Al no haber instrumentos eléctricos todo era talento puro.  De aquel entonces tenemos a Louis Armstrong y a Bessie Smith, una de las mejores voces que hayan existido. La década de los 30’s nos presenta  a Ella Fitzgerald, los años 40’s tuvo la Segunda Guerra mundial  y en mi opinión con la excepción del Sr. Nat King Cole otra voz excepcional  no salió de esta era. Un interesante hecho de aquellos años, el Rock (para este entonces  Soul,  Jazz, R&B  o Gospel) eran ritmos  de negros, no fue hasta principio de la década de los 50’s  que los blancas comenzaron a cantar rock, unos cuantos nombres me  vienen a mi memoria, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash,  Elvis Presley,  Jerry  Lee Lewis y muchos otros.  Del otro lado del charco los Británicos no aportaron mucho a los inicios del Rock, eran 
orquestas con un líder de banda al  frente, con frecuencia  dirigían a
la orquesta con una baqueta, los músicos estaban divididos en secciones  dependiendo del ritmo que tocaban,
habían metales, instrumentos de vientos y en oportunidades habían cuerdas, los  cantantes siempre estaban en el anonimato, muy pocas veces aparecían en los créditos de los discos. Los 60’s fueron un juego totalmente distinto, la verdadera explosión del Rock se dio y en ambos extremos del charco, de Estados Unidos emergieron nombres como:  James Brown, Bob Dylan, Janice Joplins y Jimi Hendrix  , La invasión Británica nos trajo bandas como, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones y The Who. Los 70’s formaron la era del  Hard Rock, Los 80’s trajeron al  Heavy Metal y como consecuencia al Thrash Metal, Speed Metal  y al Gothic Rock.  Los 90’s trajeron al  Alternative Rock, Death Rock y lo que mi amigo Sergio Ivan Barbosa  llama la Invasion Alemana. Yo le perdí el rastro al Rock al evolucionar  en Emo y el Grind Core.  El Rock en Latino  América ha tenido una evolución algo diferente, unas cuantas bandas han incursionado con éxito en este
género: Zapato 3 y Caramelos de Cianuro  de  Venezuela,  de Colombia Kraken  y Ekhymosis, banda de la cual Juanes se separo y se volvió solistas, de México tenemos a café Tacuba y Molotov, de Guatemala Alux Nahual, de Argentina Soda Estéreo y Charlie García, de Chile La ley, de España Barón Rojo y  Miguel Ríos,  de Jamaica y las Islas el Reggae con Bob Marley y de Brazil sepultura y Violator que se encuentran entre  las treinta mejores bandas del mundo en Thrash
